SPIRIT OF HYGIEIA

Picture
Spirit of Hygieia, aluminum screening, wire dimensions variable, 2016
Spirit of Hygieia was installed at the Rosemount Branch of the Somerset West Health Centre and was created as a wish of good health to  all visitors.  It  represents the spirit of Hygieia, a Greek and Roman mythological goddess and daughter of the god of medicine.  Hygieia personified health, cleanliness and hygiene and was associated with the prevention of sickness and the continuation of good health. Her name is the source of the word "hygiene". (ref. Wikipedia)

Created from black aluminum screening, it presents an ominous yet wistful, airy and floating form that fills the Mezzanine Gallery.

Appropriately situated in the Somerset West Rosemount Health Centre entrance, this installation is intended to project the energy of good health to all that pass through its doors.
